Best Ways to Spend a Rainy Day

By Sara Addis

As a study abroad student in Amsterdam, I have had my fair share of rainy days. I would go so far as to say I am a rainy day expert. Here are the activities I have found most enjoyable while waiting out the rain.

#1. Puzzles are considered one of the most popular rainy-day activities in Amsterdam. Every coffee shop or cafe has at least a handful of puzzles to entertain patrons. If you’re looking for an extra challenge, try to complete the puzzle without ever having seen the finished image from the box.

#2. Amsterdam has some of the best museums in the world, and I have found that a warm, cozy museum is one of the best places to spend a drizzly day.

#3. Once a week, my dorm hosts an international film night. Foreign films are a great way to distract yourself while confined indoors. Try watching a film with English subtitles, and enjoy learning about a new culture.

#4. Try a new recipe. Look on youtube or any social media platform for ideas, and you might just find yourself a new, delicious favorite. I recently learned how to make a frittata with bacon and pesto and have found myself enjoying my newfound chef skills.

#5. Crack open a new mystery novel. The rainy weather will only add to the suspense of the book. With a warm blanket and a cup of hot tea, you can enjoy a pleasant afternoon reading.

#6. Practice self-care. For me, this means physical care like moisturizing, straightening my hair, painting my nails, or making a homemade face mask. For someone else, this might mean taking that nap that you needed or making yourself a feel-good playlist. Take the time to put yourself first, and when the sun is shining, you’ll be ready to face the day.

#7. Take advantage of the free time to clean your space. Vacuum, dust, do laundry, organize, and make your room into a more enjoyable place to spend time. If your mom would be proud, you know you’ve done a good job.

#8. Try meditation. Although it may seem daunting at first, meditation is a great way to reconnect with your body and mind. I like to put on white noise (which you can get from a free app), sit cross-legged, and let my thoughts fade away. You might also try finding a guided meditation on Youtube.

A rainy day may seem like the end of fun, but it is really just the start. On your next rainy day, try one of these activities, and let us know what you think! I have found that some of my favorite days in Amsterdam have been spent indoors, enjoying my own company.
