Creating an incredible wardrobe can take time, patience and energy. When trying to start a new closet, there are a few basic pieces that can go a long way and are easier to find than you may think. Once you have those versatile basics to work with, you can put together all different types of outfits for every occasion. It’s all about having those timeless pieces you can always rely on. Here are the top six essential items you need to begin a great wardrobe.

The “Little Black Dress”

A classic, of course. The little black dress will never go out of style and is a staple to have in your closet. It’s always reassuring to know you have a reliable dress to fall back on when an important event is coming up. Of course, going shopping for a new dress is always fun, but the brick and mortar stores have increasingly been closing due to the convenience of their online counterparts. However, online shopping can be tricky unless you know the brand and what size you normally get. So, if you order a dress online and it doesn’t work for some reason, you always have your little black dress as your saving grace.

Black, White and Blue

Having a few great pairs of jeans can go a long way. You can dress them up with a pair of booties or dress them down with sneakers. A pair of black jeans are perfect for a night out or when you want to go for a darker look, which usually works well in the winter. White jeans can be worn over the summer and on vacations when a lighter look is more the vibe. When it comes to blue jeans, these are really going to be your staple. They can be worn all year round to a multitude of different places and events.

Pro tip: If you are really tall or short, some stores will sell special versions of their jeans meant for people with longer or shorter legs

Graphic Tees

Graphic tees are a fun way to dress casual while still dressing cute. They’re also super easy to find because they’re sold pretty much everywhere and can be found for really cheap, too. They can be thrown on with leggings or athletic shorts to go to class or to places like the library, the grocery store or the nail salon. They can also be dressed up with jeans or jean shorts with a belt if you’re grabbing lunch with friends or family.

Sneakers, Sandals and Booties

When it comes to shoes, I honestly don’t think I could ever have too many. We all have those nights when we go through half our closet to put together an outfit, and it’s so satisfying to have the perfect pair of shoes to complete it. Again, there are three essential types of shoes you need to have in your closet. Sneakers are so versatile and can transition from day to night really easily. You can wear them with athletic shorts or leggings for a more casual look and with jeans, jean skirts or shorts for a cuter, more dressed up look. A pair of nice sandals for the summer can go with a variety of outfits. You can wear them with jean shorts during the day for lunch and with jeans or a sundress at night for dinner. They’re perfect for when it’s just too hot to put sneakers on. Booties are perfect to use for nicer outfits, usually for going out or going to fancy dinners. Again, they can be worn with jeans, skirts and dresses.

Sweater Weather

Even though sweaters are typically meant for the fall and winter, they can also be a great piece to use in the spring. Not all sweaters are super heavy, so some are acceptable to wear when it’s a little warmer. In the spring, it’s fun to layer a sweater over a flowy dress, which again, you could wear sneakers with. When it gets colder, sweaters are perfect to wear with jeans, a belt and booties when you aren’t able to just wear sweatpants and a sweatshirt.

Belts

A belt can really pull a look together, and aside from its fashion benefits, it can save your outfit when a pair of jeans just won’t stay pulled up. A simple black belt can be used in so many outfits and just adds an extra something to an outfit that seems kind of flat. Once you find a classic black belt, it’s always fun to try new trendy ones like cheetah or chain belts.
