Dear Readers,
Happy April! While there is plenty to look forward to this month, the most exciting event will be the weekend of April 13-15, the annual celebration of Moms Weekend at the University of Illinois. Filled with craft shows, long walks around campus, and bottomless plates of brunch, Moms Weekend is a time for students to make memories and have fun with their moms, who they likely haven’t had many chances to see throughout the school year.
This year, everyone at The Spread wanted to do something special to honor their moms for the upcoming weekend. We are eternally grateful for everything these wonderful ladies have done for us, so we wanted to express our thanks through this feature. Without further ado, here are our thank-you’s, love and best wishes for Mom, from our staff.
“My mother left a high-paying and successful corporate career so that she could be there for her children, and for that my three brothers and I are eternally grateful. She taught us to be caring, hardworking, and sensible people. We all have a long road ahead of us, but we know that if we ever need help, we can give her a call. Thank you, Mom.”
-Jack Coombs, Photographer/Videographer
“This is one of my favorite pictures of me and my mom. I hated having my hair done, but she loved me enough not to let me run around looking, in her words, like a ragamuffin, so every day she would sit me down and style my hair. I kicked. I cried. I pouted. Still, she always ignored my fits and ensured each lock was detangled, polished, and in place. To this day, this is the level of care she puts into everything she touches and the world would be a far worse place without her devotion. Love you always.”
-Riley Corboy, Co-Editor
“I am so thankful to have a mom who supports everything I do and is along for my adventures. I know I can do whatever makes me happy and my mom will be there to support me, as a mother and as a best friend.”
-Mea Donnelly, Relationships Editor
“Thanks for always making me laugh even when no one else can and giving me the best sense of humor of all time.” 😉
-Rachel King, Staff Writer
“Mom, thank you for teaching me how to passionately and confidently pursue life. You are the reason I have such strength and curiosity, and a love for all things outdoors. I love you!”
-Clare Kocher, Staff Writer
“My mother is my ultimate inspiration who I strive to resemble each day. Whether it be her fashion sense, wit, humor, or humble heart, I want to glisten with warmth and chicness just as she does. I’m so blessed to have a relationship that allows us to be best friends, yet she will always get the respect of being my mom. Calling her on the daily is a given. I love you so so much mama. 사랑해요 내 멋진 엄마!”
-Jane Lee, Fashion Editor
“Thank you, mamá, for teaching me how to be a strong, hardworking woman by example. You never fail to inspire me. Te quiero!”
-Indira Midha, Pop Culture Editor
“Mom, I am so lucky to have you in my life! You are an amazing role model for our family and truly hold us all together. It’s an inspiration to everyone in your life to watch you grow stronger each day in your fight against chronic Lyme disease. Even with everything going on in your own life, you somehow manage to spend quality time with us and praise us for all of our accomplishments (big and small). I know I speak for everyone in our family when I say that I wouldn’t be the person I am today without your love and support!”
-Maddie Sievers, Staff Writer
“My mom has always supported me in all my endeavors, and she’s done whatever she could to make my life as full of ease as possible, even if it means making her life a little harder. I couldn’t be more thankful for her, and I want her to know that. I hope I can pay her back in the future and buy her the best house and car on the market!”
-Elaine Sine, Lifestyles Editor
“Thank you, Mom, for loving me endlessly and always supporting me. You have always been there for me whenever I needed you, whether it be a talk on the phone or a drive down to campus. You are one of my best friends and I am so lucky to have a wonderful Mom like you!! I love you!”
-Melanie Smith, Staff Writer
“I would like to thank my mother and my recent late grandmother for raising me to be a wonderful woman who knows her worth; for giving me the confidence and strength to persevere even in the darkest moments; and most importantly, for teaching me the importance of values and morals.”
-Kelli Walker, Staff Writer
“Thank you to my mom for always being there for me. I would not be the woman I am today without the support and unconditional love she has given me every step of the way.”
-Maddy Talbert, Staff Writer
We hope you all have a wonderful Moms Weekend. Even if your mom can’t make it to campus for the weekend, make sure to give her a call and let her know how much she means to you. We would not be who we are today without our moms, so let’s make the most of this month by celebrating them and reflecting on everything they’ve done to help us go above and beyond.
From the bottom of our hearts, Thank You, Mom.
Sincerely,
Madison Gillespie, Editor-In-Chief
P.S.:
I couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to thank my own mom for being the passionate, joyful, and caring woman that she is. There’s never a day that goes by where she doesn’t have a smile on her face, nor a day where she fails to put a smile on mine. I wouldn’t be the strong and driven woman that I am today if not for her. Thank you for teaching me to always follow my dreams, to never settle for less than I deserve, and to never lose faith in myself. I can always count on you for support and guidance. Thanks for being my best friend, and I love you lots.
