Welcome to the December Issue

Dear Readers,

Happy December! After weeks of mild temperatures and 50-degree days, it appears that winter has finally arrived. The Quad is blanketed in sparkly white snow, flurries are dancing in the chilly breeze, and an inexplicable quantity of pompom hats, scarves and snow boots can be seen on any given day. Final exams have given us far more than our fair share of dark circles, sleepless nights and seven-page papers, but winter break is here at last. We can go home, relax and spend time with loved ones as we immerse ourselves in the holiday season.

This month, we want to bring the spirit of the holidays right to your fingertips. From Christmas gifts to family traditions to New Year’s resolutions, our December Issue has a little bit of something for everyone. Of course, it would not be complete without a few nods to campus life as well. This month we feature interviews from Gary Strain, teaching assistant and doctoral student at UIUC, and Annie Chen, a student intern at the university’s renowned Japan House. You can also watch clips from a fashion show put on by Brands Give Back, a new registered student organization.

With the year drawing to a close, we cannot help but feel grateful for the success our magazine has had this semester. Knowing that you have been enjoying our articles each month fills us with more warmth than a steaming mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows on top! We look forward to seeing what 2017 brings and can’t wait for you to join us for another year of interviews and movie reviews, of relationship advice and OOTDs. The Spread has always been based on what you like, loyal readers, so our resolution for 2017 is to continue publishing articles that are both entertaining and relevant to YOU! The new year is going to be a good one, I can feel it.

So get nice and comfy in your favorite holiday sweater and curl up by the fire to enjoy the December Issue, all wrapped up and topped off with a bow. While I have revealed a few goodies, there are still plenty of gifts left to read – and I’ll let you do the unwrapping! From The Spread family to yours, we wish you the happiest of holidays, wherever and however you may celebrate. Have fun, be safe, and make the most of your month off with the people you love. At the end of the day, the latest iPhone (what is it, the 12th model now?) and gift cards may be nice, but family and friends are always the greatest gift of all.

Sincerely,

Madison Gillespie, festive EIC
