Let me just start off by saying I’m a huge Harry Potter fan. I grew up with those films, so naturally, when I found J.K. Rowling was coming out with a prequel, I almost lost it. I was so ready to be thrown back into the wizarding world. However, that’s not exactly what happened.
If you’re a moviegoer into fantasy and adventure films, then this movie may be exactly what you need this holiday season. Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne, is a wizard from England who travels to New York to handle some business regarding his collection of mythical creatures. Along the way he meets a no-mag, aka a muggle, and two other witches.
While in New York, Scamander and his new friends are on the run from the Ministry of Magic, trying to find his lost creatures and trying to figure out where the dark magic wreaking havoc in the city is coming from.
With seamless acting and a great script, this movie is perfect for anyone who loves being transported into a fantasy-filled world. However, if you are an avid Harry Potter fan, I would recommend lowering your standards before going to see this film.
Yes, spells were cast and mythical beasts were let loose, but besides that I didn’t feel the magic the way I did when watching Harry Potter films. Granted, this wasn’t a Harry Potter movie, so I probably shouldn’t have gone into the theater holding the two films so close together.
Nevertheless, if you are expecting to feel the awe and amazement you felt while watching Harry Potter, this movie may not be the film for you. If you have never seen Harry Potter, however, you will be blown away by this film.
