Are you a spicy food fanatic? If yes, then I challenge you to tingle your taste buds with Maize’s Torta Ahogada. “Torta Ahogada” translates to “a drowning or suffocating sandwich.” It is a sandwich stuffed with beans, lettuce, tomato, avocado, cheese and sour cream. You can choose from a variety of meats to put into your sandwich: asada, chicken, pastor, and chorizo. After making the sandwich, they dunk it into a sea of spicy sauce, therefore literally drowning the sandwich in spiciness.

As a spicy food fanatic, I remember looking at my Torta Ahogada inside Maize and thinking it wouldn’t be that spicy. Regret hit me instantly after taking the first bite. Not only did the spiciness instantly explode inside my mouth, it lingered, causing a fire within my throat. I had tears coming out my eyes the whole entire time I was eating my Torta Ahogada! I called it quits on the spicy food for the rest of the week.
Not a fan of spicy food? Maize also offers a variety of Mexican food such as burritos, nachos, quesadillas, and tacos. Their prices are relatively cheap and pretty reasonable for a filling meal. Some would say it is as authentic as Mexican food can get on campus, with better prices and food quality than Chipotle. Maize is located at 60 East Green Street. Check it out!
